Lose Yourself Somewhere

Is this video any good?

That's up to you.

But is Jordy Smith any good? There's no wiggle room here. As a surfer, he's quite possibly great - one of the greatest of the era.

Why? Not because the mid-20s, shaggy-locked South African just won the ASP Tour event in Rio, Brasil. Nor because everyone says he's got greatness in him and O'Neill pay him many millions just to surf great and look goofy.

He's got greatness, I think, because he's both strangely light-footed and hugely powerful. He can fling all the airs in the book - plenty enough to win at a small-medium beachbreak contest like Rio where the most airy-fairy pros are expected to perform their magic. But, aside from that, there's no escaping the fact that Jordy Smith can make huge Sunset look like a childrens' fun park.

He's got Elkerton. Garcia. Ian Cairns. Even a touch of Noll about him. All somehow fused with the kind of anti-gravity ability that's now an essential ingredient of modern pro surfing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fawning fan trying to convert you, the viewer who doesn't particularly give a shit either way. I'm just trying to point out that if you're looking for one hell of a fusion of the two extremes of contemporary surfing, you might find it in this ... thing. This ... gorilla with wings.

This video doesn't do him justice, but it offers two minutes of diversion that underlines the point..

Oh yeah, his sponsors are saying the same thing:

"O'Neill surfer, Jordy Smith has one of the strongest repertoires of any modern surfer. His raw and aggressive aerial skills are matched by his ability to utilise the entire rail of the board to shift liquid mountains and he does this all with a smile on his face and an easy going attitude. Filmed during the first half of 2013 in Western Australia and the long tapering walls of Bells Beach in Victoria. #loseyourselfsomewhere
