Out in the Lineup

Dude, this is so gay.
No, seriously, it’s about the hidden lives of surfers who happen to be homosexuals. In the US it’s a hot topic this week, what with NBA basketball star Jason Collins becoming (unbelievably) the first professional from a major sports league to come out of the closet. Buyt all over the surfing world, it’s a taboo issue.
How many gay surfers are there in the Top 44? In your town? In your lineup? Answer is, you don’t know because in most cases, gay surfers don’t tell people they’re gay. In fact, gay surfers everywhere usually feel a powerful need to keep their sexuality secret because, as much as surfing is a supposedly “laid back” “lifestyle”, it’s also a horribly homophobic culture.
So this film by Thomas Castets – made in Australia, where gay and similar phobias seem to have become accepted national pastimes – is a brave move, and probably one that’s long overdue.
It’ll be interesting to see how the surf media handles this one when it’s released at the end of 2013.
For now, here’s a teaser and below, the director’s note:

“OUT in the line-up” is currently in production.
