The Present is artist Thomas Campbell’s latest, perhaps greatest piece of work. He’s a guy who has nurtured a unique aesthetic style and an artsy approach to all his films (which include Sprout and The Seedling), all of which have been shot on film, not digi gear. This one ranges wide from Stephanie Gilmore making perfect tubes look even prettier, to Danny Hess, his boards and some mind-blowing board tests in the Mentawais, to an island pointbreak off the African coast firing deliriously.
The Present looks set to be a classic, it’s earthy reputation enhanced by Campbell’s avowed aim of touring the film in theatres and other venues wherever possible. If you’re in the UK you can catch it on Saturday May 23rd at St. Merryn Village Hall near Constantine, North Cornwall, and on June 2nd at the Roxy Bar and Screen in London (check www.thesurfscreen for info). In the US you can still catch it at The Long Beach Art Theater in Long Beach on May 21st, The Victoria Theatre San Francisco on May 22nd, the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz on May 23rd (check www.trimyourlifeaway.com).
