Ever since surfer and artist Rick Griffin slid his Harley Heritage Softail motorcycle under a left-turning delivery van near Petaluma, California on August 16th of 1991, Dale Webster has honored the memory of one of surfing’s brightest lights with an annual birthday memorial celebration at a surf spot dubbed El Griffo’s, which is located somewhere north of Bodega Bay.

“Rick passed in ’91, so June 18, 2007 makes it 15 cakes,” reflects the man known to some as Daily Wavester (he holds the Guinness world record for the most consecutive days surfed: three waves a day for over 32 years … and counting).

“This year there were almost waves,” Dale notes. “It’s always a nice drive through the campground in a Redwood forest, no one around. I wish the pictures had turned out better.”

Dale said that pulling out old pictures, some 45 years old, was like “sdeeing them for the first time again.”

This year’s celebration came just as an important retrospective on Rick’s art (Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence) showing now through September 30, 2007 at the Laguna Art Museum in laguna beach, California. Click to: www.lagunaartmuseum.org
