First Teahupoo of the season – frickin HUGE

17th March, Teahupoo, Tahiti. The first solid south swell of the season came in early and bigger than anyone really believed it would. The forecasters couldn’t get a really solid handle on it but a few of the world’s best did fly in to join the local masters on some South Pacific mega bombs.
Riders of the day were surely Raimana Van Bastolaer, the don of Teahupoo, and Manoa Drollet, the prince, who rode one of the biggest waves of the day and took one of the worst wipeouts. Also going large were veteran uber-surfer Shane Dorian and a 17 year-old lad from New Zealand, Sam Hawke, who some say rode the biggest wave of the day, and possibly ever at Teahupoo.
So is this an El Niño thing and is the southern hemi winter going to be as jaw-dropping as the North Hemisphere’s? When asked, weathermen are giving a good solid “maybe”.
Remember, keep your expectations low and you may be pleasantly surprised …
