Savage Cinema – Spirit of Akasha and Bella Vita to premiere at prestigious international film festival

Two major events: films, surf and music at the Principal Theatre and Big Friday at the Velodrome.

September 21 at the Principal Theatre will see the world premiere of Spirit of Akasha, a re-interpretation of the classic surf movie Morning of the Earth 40 years down the line, the result of collaboration between some of the biggest names in today´s surf and music scenes. Thanks to Warner Music Australia, the film boasts a fantastic soundtrack featuring artists like Ben Howard, Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT), Chris Robinson (Black Crowes), Atoms for Peace (Thom Yorke), Xavier Rudd and Angus Stone, who have created exclusive pieces for the project.

Director Andrew Kidman -one of the contemporary heavyweights of the purest surf culture- and some of the surfers starring in the film will be there at the Principal Theatre to present the film in a very special showing which will be followed by a screening of Morning of the Earth and an exciting live performance of it´s soundtrack by the band Odei.

The second major event will take place on the 27th at the Antonio Elorza Velodrome. In the tradition of last year´s Big Friday, the event will host an epic double feature: The world premiere of Cerro Torre – A Snowball´s Chance in Hell and the world premiere of Into the Mind. With the former film focussing on free climbing and the latter on freeskiing, both features take different approaches on the same common goal: taking height to the limit.

Cerro Torre – A Snowball´s Chance in Hell describes the first ever free-climb ascent of Cerro Torre. Three years in the making, this breathtaking feature film relives David Lamas ascent of the infamous Patagonian mountain, that has captured the imagination of alpinists and mountaineers for decades, and highlights the many challenges and controversies David had to overcome on his journey. David Lama himself will be attending the film´s premiere with director, Thomas Dirnhofer, as well as other members of the cast.

Sherpas Cinema, the most awarded production company in the genre with the film All.I.Can, will have us shivering with the cold of the deepest snow thanks to the exploration of new cinematic techniques in Into the mind, its most ambitious project.

A mind-blowing space will be used for these two proposals, with one of the biggest screens in Europe, to convey the vertigo and majesty of some of the most dangerous mountains in the world. The contribution of Mendi Film Festival has been essential in designing this “action in the heights” and aims at including the extended family of mountain-lovers into this epic event.
