Last September, professional surfers, boardsports industry leaders and personalities came together in Hossegor, France, for the annual surf industry gala dinner, the EuroSIMA Waterman’s Ball whose vocation is to raise funds to support charitable and environmental groups. All proceeds from the dinner and the sales auction enabled EuroSIMA to collect 38,000 euros that the EuroSIMA Board has decided to share between the 7 following projects for the year 2008:
SURFRIDER FOUNDATION: Initiatives Océanes
7,500 euros will be awarded to the Surfrider Foundation Europe to promote one of its most federative actions: the «Initiatives Océanes». This three day event mobilizes thousands of volunteers around the world who participate in the cleaning of beaches, educate and make people aware of the ocean protection.
SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE
2,000 euros will be given to the English association Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) for their campaigns to improve European Bathing Water legislation and protect surfers and other recreational water users from sewage pollution.
4,000 euros will help the association Mountain Riders to strengthen its teams and develop at a European level. It will also support its educational programs to help preserve mountain environment.
EUROSIMA ENVIRONMENTAL EXHIBITION
EuroSIMA developed in partnership with the Boardsports Cluster, the Aquitaine Region, and the ADEME (French Agency for Environmental and Energy Management) an eco-designed exhibition dedicated to the EuroSIMA company members’ employees to inform and educate them on the daily habits that can have a positive impact and help preserve environment. This action comes within the framework of the EuroSIMA Environmental Management program developed among its members. The exhibition will be free of charge for the EuroSIMA members. 2,000 euros will be allocated to the logistics and transportation budget of the exhibition to the companies’ headquarters.
EUROSIMA ECOLOGICAL INNOVATION COMPETITION
10,000 euros will be granted to the EuroSIMA Ecological Innovation Competition whose objective is to stimulate and support innovation and eco-design in the boardsports industry.
INDO CHILDREN FUTUR
Finally, 2,500 euros will be given to the humanitarian organization Indo Children Futur founded in 2000, which participates in the reconstruction of Indonesian villages devastated by earthquakes or tsunamis. This association provides a simple and pragmatic assistance to the Balinese children (medical, educational, financial and food assistance).
100 MILLION POLYBAGS PROJECT
The boardsports industry buys and uses to seal around and protect its different ranges of textile products an individual plastic bag called «polybag» generally made of polyethylene or polypropylene. Considering the environmental impacts it generates, the boardsports industry is searching a suitable and environmental-friendly solution to replace polybags. 10,000 euros will be awarded to the EuroSIMA Cluster to participate in an eco-design study to fi nd the most suitable packaging with the best environmental features.
