World Celebrates Coastal Environments

Surfers across the world stood united in celebration of International Surfing Day. Founded three years ago, the event was created to give surfers across the globe an opportunity to celebrate the sport of surfing, as well as raise awareness of the need to protect the planet’s beach and coastal environments.

This year, International Surfing Day was formally celebrated in 80 separate events taking place in over a dozen countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and elsewhere. Most surfers marked the day by simply doing what they do best—paddling out and catching a few waves.

“To be out there interacting with our oceans and riding waves, it’s an incredible experience,” says former World Surfing Champion Shaun Tomson. “This is a great opportunity to let the rest of the world see just how special the sport of surfing is.”

Like Tomson, many surfers also celebrated the day by taking part in one of the many environmental events hosted by the Surfrider Foundation throughout the day. From educational outreaches to beach clean-ups to native re-planting, surfers and other coastal enthusiasts showed themselves ready and willing to roll up their sleeves and pitch in.

“As a surfer I thought it was important to show up and give something back to our oceans,” said actor David Chokachi, who attended an International Surfing Day beach clean-up at Venice Beach sponsored by Surfrider Foundation’s Malibu and South Bay Chapters. The Surfrider Foundation estimates that over 2,500 lbs of trash and litter were collected from this year’s International Surfing Day activities.
