‘Life Is A Wave’ Rolls Through San Francisco

Save The Waves raises $25,000 at 2nd annual benefit event

Life Is A Wave, an annual benefit bash for Save The Waves Coalition, received a groundswell of support in downtown San Francisco last week. Headlined by The Mother Hips and featuring live music, top DJs, art, and film, the multimedia event kept the 111 Minna Gallery at capacity for nearly five hours. When the music finally faded and the bar shut down, over $25,000 was raised for Save The Waves’ environmental programs.

“It was overwhelming to see the breadth and depth of support at the event,” said Save The Waves executive director Dean LaTourrette. “I think people recognize that the battle to protect natural coastline is truly a global fight, and affects surfers and coastal advocates alike. It’s really gratifying to be able raise funds and awareness for our coastal programs, but also deliver a rip-roaring event for the Bay Area surf community.”

In addition to the night’s entertainment, long-time San Francisco resident and environmental activist, Mark Massara, received Save The Waves’ 2008 Wave Saver Award at the event for his tireless work to protect the California coast. Massara, who works as Director of Coastal Programs for the Sierra Club, has contributed to a string of environmental success as of late, including a victory in February over a proposed toll road through San Onofre State Park in Orange County, as well the rejection last June of a Clint Eastwood-backed plan to develop a swath of Monterrey coast.
