Surf’s Up! The swell rolled in and the surfers paddled out as the 31st Annual KIMO’S Longboard Contest was held at Mala Warf, a classic left-hand surf spot in Lahaina, Maui. In perfect 3-5 foot surf, six finalists were awarded prizes, including:
• 1st Place: Kalei Kauhane
• 2nd Place: J.B. Falbo
• 3rd Place: Kent Apo
• 4th Place: Albert Jenks
• 5th Place: Ken Goring
• 6th Place: Neal Norris
“We are stoked to celebrate the traditional, classic-style surfing that KIMO’S Longboard Contest endorses,” said contest coordinator Jack Starr. “Moreover, we are thankful for the generous donations from our contest sponsors, partners, supporters and neighbors.”
The Annual KIMO’S Longboard Contest is held in honor of Rob Thibaut, one of the two founders of TS Restaurants, and differs in criteria from other surfing contests. The contest is open to both male and females of all ages. There is a double elimination, meaning every surfer surfs at least two heats. The top three contestants of the first heat advance to the second heat and the bottom four move to a ‘loser’s bracket’.
The top two winners of the ‘loser’s bracket’ advance to the next heat. In addition, heats run for 20 minutes as opposed to the normal fifteen-minute heat time for most surf competitions.
