Save the Waves Filming New Documentary in Chile

Save the Waves Coalition have announced that production will begin on April 28th on a new feature-length documentary film based in Chile. Tentatively entitled ‘All Points South’, the film will be based on the battle that has brought surfers and fishermen together in a grass-roots effort to fight water pollution in this beautiful South American country. The film will feature high-octane performances from some of the world’s most accomplished surf explorers, such as Canadian Raph Bruhwiler, and Americans Keith Malloy, James Pribram, and Mark Healey. Also joining the crew will be surfer-filmmaker Timmy Turner, who recently overcame a deadly staph infection in his brain that was caused by water pollution. The surfers will be riding some of the world’s best left hand point breaks in an effort to bring more attention to what has become a world-wide problem – the rapid increase of industrial pollution, human waste, and over-fishing – and its threat to the ocean habitat and quality of life for people who live near the sea.

Featuring interviews with local fishermen, families, and Native South Americans, the film will be narrated by Chilean professional surfer Ramon Navarro, the prodigal son of a family of fishermen who has recently earned a reputation as a big-wave maniac. The project will also document the return trip of ‘Eco-Warriors’ James Pribram and Will Henry, and their ongoing effort to challenge the industry that poses the single greatest threat to the ocean’s health: pulp manufacturing.

The breathtaking scenery of Southern Chile’s forests, lakes and mountains stands in stark contrast to certain areas that are choking on industrial pollutants from the rapidly growing pulp industry. With almost 3,000 miles of coastline and a population of just 13 million people, Chile has become a favorite destination for all types of outdoor enthusiasts – but for how much longer? The pulp industry is taking advantage of lax monitoring and enforcement of environmental standards, and is using its political might to intimidate the opposition to its often negligent practices. New mills are being built at a rapid pace, using substandard technology, with little or no regard to impacts on human health, or to the negative effects on other important industries such as winegrowing, ranching, farming or tourism.

‘All Points South’ will examine the pulp industry from the inside out, and will expose it as a threat to the environment and economy that we, as the world’s citizens, cannot afford to ignore. ‘All Points South’ will show how surfers and fishermen have joined together out of a mutual love and respect for the sea, and how that bond is driving a new kind of conservation movement. ‘All Points South’ will show us the beauty of Chile’s surf and natural scenery, entertain us with high-caliber surfing, and provide us with an example of individual empowerment that will give us hope that we can, in fact, make the world a better place.
