In December 2007, the UK Government stated that it is likely to allow oil and gas exploration and development in a dolphin sanctuary off the coast of the Moray Firth in Scotland. In combination with other threats, this could drive a small and vulnerable population to extinction.
The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) have established a ‘Protect Our Dolphins’ campaign to protect the whales and dolphins of the Moray Firth, including the bottlenose dolphins, so that they can survive and thrive in a clean and safe environment. They need YOUR help to press the Government to keep oil and gas out of the sanctuary. The Government has allowed until 14th March 2008 for the public to respond. We MUST act NOW!
The push to persuade the government to keep oil and gas out of the SAC is of course, urgent. But it is only the start of the campaign. These dolphins face many threats and to achieve their vision, the WDCS need to engage in a broad range of activities.
