Dan Merkel - Behind the Lens

Alex Dick-Read

A little glimpse through the eyes of Dan Merkel, a master of the surf photography arts. Merkel is known as one of the original and greatest water photographers for his work in Hawaii during the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and continuing to today.
This little piece by Corduroy Films, shot in New York, follows the fish out of water as he wanders the streets and holds forth on surf, life and sun loungers.

Here’s what the film-maker Doug Walker had to say:
Dan Merkel is the legendary photographer who captured surfings most memorable images throughout the 1970’s. Dan then went on in his career winning an EMMY as well as shooting on such classic movies as “Big Wednesday”. I had a chance to follow Dan in NYC after Premiering the film “Lost & Found” with his camera while he photographed shooting his new love of panoramic images.

Terrific short! Great concept to follow him through NYC as a contrast to his normal shots. Like the music, the slow motion, the feeling one gets listening to his thoughts. Thank you. Important to pay respects to the photographic masters
