Blank Innovators Release Ultimate Shaping Foam with an Assist from Foam Icon Harold Walker
In keeping with their tradition of honoring the past while blazing trails into the future, Ice-Nine is proud to announce the new entry in our foam quiver – MOWSES, named because it talks surf scripture, it mows, and it all started with one of the original seafaring legends, the South Bay’s very own Harold Walker.
In the beginning, the focus was on the rider, and the MDI-based foam, Able, was created. Then Ice-Nine trained their eyes and ears on shapers, cooking up the mighty fine and sweet, sugar-based Cane. Now, they have married Walker’s deep foam experience and knowledge with their own state-of-the-art processing and technology, enabling them to cook up the ultimate shapers’ foam.
This TDI foam is not only ultralight and white but is also extremely easy to plane and sand. It’s tight, small, closed cells translate to greater liveliness and a longer life in the water than other TDI foams. The decks are processed to provide the kind of dent resistance that characterizes their renowned Cane formula. Likewise, there are no sensitivity issues. In addition, for high-volume production, Mowses is a robust and production-friendly foam. And finally, for those who are not quite ready to switch to the more flexible MDI formulations, they have retained the traditional chemistry that has provided so many riders with countless perfect surfing experiences over the years.
“I very much admire Ice-Nine’s aggressive pursuit of advanced technology in Eco-friendly foam, molding and gluing techniques and foam mixing procedures,” says Harold Walker. “Ice-Nine’s advanced mixing procedure and the Original Walker Foam formula result in a very small cell foam with the well known Walker Foam shapeability and highest weight to strength ratio.”
“We are privileged to be able to work with Harold and have access to his formulas and knowledge,” says Ice-Nine founder Jon Stillman. “In terms of tradition, we are totally tapping the source. Harold actually pre-dates Gordon Clark in terms of whose foam got there first, and accordingly, we took our time in trying to improve upon the legendary and elegant formula. It’s taken over two years for us radically re-engineer the process of blank manufacturing, finally mastering the technology. With the addition of Harold’s original recipe we now offer a full range of foam performance from the extreme flex of Able to the shapeability of Mowses, with Cane striking a balance somewhere between the two. We didn’t re-invent the wheel, but we have definitely given it a few new grooves.”
